Academic Clubs

An academic club is a setting where abstract concepts and sophisticated subject matter are taught through dramatic play, the arts and the use of concrete materials and manipulatives. Each club curriculum follows a developmental sequence based on the progression of human history.

The purpose of an academic club is to provide a relaxed, interesting environment in which students learn about a period of history through tangible experiences and by taking on the persona of a character from that time period. Total immersion in the history and culture of the time period allows students to commit complex concepts and content to memory more easily. Costumes, passwords, music, art, films and celebrations make the students feel special and give them a sense of belonging. “Living the experience” empowers the students to take risks in their learning and to become more receptive to instruction while strengthening their focus on the learning tasks at hand.

The academic clubs place an emphasis on critical thinking skills as the students are placed in many problem solving situations. The dramatic framework of each club and kinesthetic learning work to root the information in the minds of the students making it a part of them.
