Since 1993, the Lab School of Washington has selected 2 graduates each year to receive the Outstanding Learning Disabled Alumni award. Please enjoy seeing who they are and reading about their achievements. Also, join us in attending the next Lab School of Washington Gala on the evening of Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in celebrating two more alumni awardees.

Alexandra Beveridge – 2004

Alexandra left Lab in 1976. In 1987 she graduated from Connecticut College, Cum Laude with a double major in Economics and Italian Literature. In 1988 she enrolled in Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, The Bologna Center in Italy to concentrate on International Economics and European studies. Alexandra married Alessandro Spighi and is raising her two children while doing Event Planning, Holiday Rentals and operating her web page in Florence, Italy.

Dr. Adam Boldt – 2005

Adam came to the Lab School in 1985 and stayed for 7 years. While at Lab, he interned at Georgetown University Hospital’s Pediatric unit, where he discovered his love of working with sick children. At the University of California at San Diego, he earned a B.S. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. In the fall of 2001 he began studying at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He currently lives in the Baltimore area with his wife and 3 dogs and is expecting their first child in 2008. He is in the process of completing his residency in Pediatrics.

Michael Brown – 1999

Michael attended Lab from 1979-1984. He went on to Proctor Academy and graduated in 1988. Michael attended Randolph-Macon College where he earned a B.A. in Business and played football. Since 1996 he has worked for the Fairfax County Public Schools as a football coach. Since 1997, he has been a Special Education teacher at Annandale High School teaching Algebra I, Chemistry, and World Studies.

Kevin Bucher – 2007

Kevin came to the Lab School in 1982 and graduated in 1991. After returning from travels to Australia he entered James Madison University and graduated summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. While a Madison, Kevin won the Outstanding Student in Finance Award. He currently works for JP Morgan Chase’s Credit Card Division in the Marketing Department, managing a team that performs program analytics. Kevin is also Co-Chair of the Lab School Alumni Association.

Andre Cavallaro – 2007

Andre arrived at Lab in 1995 and graduated in 1998. Andre traveled from Colorado to San Francisco where he enrolled in the California Culinary Academy. After graduation, he moved to New Zealand to work at a five-star hotel. Upon his return to the DC area, Andre worked at Addie’s in Rockville where he is currently the chef. He is in the process of starting a business called Sub Urban Trading Company which will feature local, organic and sustainable foods sold in a contemporary setting in Kensington, Maryland.

Francis DeWolf - 1995

Francis spent 9 years at Lab. He moved on to Blue Ridge School in Virginia and received a Bachelor’s Degree of Science and Management from Tulane University in 1990. He joined Prudential Securities as a broker and in 1994 he was an investment Executive at Tucker Anthony Stock Brokers here in DC. Francis currently is Senior Vice-President – Investment at Oppenheimer & Company. He is married with a family.

Glenn Easley – 2000

Glenn stayed at Lab until 1986, when he transferred to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with honors in 1993. After receiving his Master’s Degree in Mathematics at the University of Maryland in 1996, he was accepted to a new Ph.D. program in computational sciences and informatics at George Mason University and was awarded this degree in the summer of 2000. Currently he is with System Planning Corporation in Arlington, Virginia where he is conducting research in imaging systems. Glenn is married and has two children.

Lakia Floyd – 2005

Lakia came to the Lab School in the 9th grade and graduated in 1995. In 2000, she graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia with a B.S. in Human Service Counseling. In 2001 she earned a M.Ed. in Human Development from George Washington University. Lakia currently works at IBM as a business analyst. Lakia is a member of the Lab School Alumni Association Steering Committee.

Jon Ford – 2002

Jonathan Ford graduated from Lab in 1991. He attended Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Business Administration. Jon is a principal with Edison Strategies, a business brokerage and consulting firm (www.edisonstrategies.com) and president of All State Manufacturing Company (www.allstatemfg.com) manufacturer of metal coffee, vending, and food service equipment. He is a director of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, Indiana Vending Council, College Misercordia Alumni Association, and the Swope Art Gallery. He also serves as an Elder for Central Presbyterian Church. Jon has served as a director of Leadership Terre Haute and the March of Dimes of the Wabash Valley. He is married to Kirsten and has twin sons, Samuel and Matthew. Jon is Co-Chair of the Lab School Alumni Association.

Jon Fox - 1993

Jon attended Lab for 7 ½ years, graduating from The Field School. Jon graduated Phi Beta Kappa in Political Science from Oberlin College, and then went to Duke Law School and receiving his law degree in 1992. Jon has been practicing law ever since.

Leah Gambal - 2003

Leah attended the Lab School for 8 years and went on to Emerson College in Massachusetts, earning a B.S. in Mass Communication and Television in 1992. She went into Children’s Television production and worked as a producer for such companies as Universal Studio and Hearst Communication. In 2000, she started working for Sesame Workshop, the non profit education organization that produces Sesame Street in 120 countries. Until February 2007, Leah was a Regional Director with the Project Management group, managing projects in Russia, Egypt and Holland. She resigned to focus her attention on being the first student member of the Lab School Board of Trustees and consulting in the area of media and branding strategies. She was the driving force behind the creation of the Lab School Alumni Association. She is married with two children and living in New York.

Ross Gilmore - 1995

Ross spent six years at Lab beginning in 1977. In 10th grade he went on to Wilson High School in DC. After graduation he attended the Metropolitan Police Department Training Academy. He spent 8 years on the police force; 5 years on the street and 3 years in community services. He left the police department in 2000, doing contract work with several companies until he was picked up by Lockheed Martin and was stationed at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is currently a Management Analyst-IT and loving it. Still single and living in Annapolis, Maryland.

Joe Green – 2003

After graduating from the Lab School, Joe attended North Carolina A&T State and then transferred to Bowie State University where he graduated with a B.S. in History and Government. He was twice on the Dean’s Academic Achievement List and the Phi Alpha Theta Historical Society. He worked as an intern in the Maryland State Legislature and then with the Maryland Attorney General’s Office. Joe currently is employed by GS Proctor, in Government Relations. He is a member of the Lab School Alumni Association Steering Committee.

Matt Hall – 2006

Matt graduated from the Lab School in 2001. He enrolled in Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida and graduated with a degree in Political Science and Business Management. He became the Student Body President in 2004-2005 as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University and a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Student Association. In 2006, he became the advance representative to the U.S. Office of the Vice President, responsible for event conduct, site preparation, schedules, diagrams, coordination with local officials, press and volunteers.

Diane Ford Jones - 1993

After spending five years at Lab, Diane attended a local public junior high and high school. She went on to Spelman College and later transferred to the University of the District of Columbia. She is now married to The Reverend V. Keith Jones. Diane was an Emmy-nominated film producer for Channel 9.

Steven Jones – 2002

Steven attended the Lab School from 1983 to 1985. He graduated from Field School and went to College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. After college he worked for the YMCA as an After School Teacher and then as a Counselor with mentally ill and physically challenged adults in Fairfax. He worked at both Alice Deal Junior High and Bell Multicultural Senior High School in Washington, DC. He was the first guidance counselor hired by Educational Transitional Services Inc. He is also an accomplished hip hop dancer!

David MacDonald – 2000

After Lab, David graduated from St. George’s High School and went on to Colorado College. He then studied arts education at the Julliard in New York. David was particularly fascinated by classical theater and Shakespeare which he called “The ultimate irony” considering his difficulty with language. In 1998 he joined the cast on the soap opera “Another World.” When it ended in 1999 he went on to “The Guiding Light” where he played the leading villain role!


David Mapes – 1996

David attended Lab for 7 years and graduated from Sandy Spring School. He interspersed college with work in a motorcycle shop. He earned an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Montgomery College, and in 1988 a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County then on to studying Information Systems Management and graduating Magna Cum Laude. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Computer Systems Management. He currently works as a Senior Application System Analyst at SAIC – STARS-SM/I in Washington, DC. He is the father of a 12 year old girl.

Chris Mattingly – 1998

Chris attended Lab for 9 years. He graduated from The Forman School where he excelled in theatre and developed an academic interest in political science. He transferred from Ithaca College to the University of Arizona where he double majored in political science and history. After some international travel he returned to the area and became a production assistant with a local video production company. He became a senior producer of educational videos and won two prestigious Telly Awards. He received his Master’s Degree from American University in 1998 and is now a free lance producer.

Darrel Parker – 2004

Darrel became an Eagle Scout when he was 16. After leaving Lab he graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1999. He attended Dillard University on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in Biology, Pre-Med, and a minor in Chemistry. Instead of going to dental school, Darrel felt he could make an important difference here at Lab. He graduated from American University with a M.Ed. Special Education/Learning Disabilities and came to work in the High School of Lab as a Physical Science Teacher and Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach.

Zahra Saleh – 2001

Zahra graduated from the Lab School in 1994 and enrolled at Florida A & M. She graduated four years later with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She completed her Master’s Degree program in Educational Administration while she taught 4th grade at Yokota West Elementary School in Tokyo, Japan for the Department of Defense. She is currently teaching 6th grade Language Arts/Reading and Geography in Hillsborough County, Florida. She is completing a Doctoral Program at Nova Southeastern University in Organizational Leadership.

Darold Smith – 1996

Darold entered the Lab School in 1976. In 1980, he went on to both the Duke Ellington School for the Arts and half-days at Coolidge High School where he graduated in 1984. By July 1985, Darold had received his black belt in Kung-Fu. He teaches private classes to children and adults in Northern Shaolinwu-Hsu Karate, Tai Chi and Kung-Fu.

Jon Stocks – 1997

Jon spent 8 years at the Lab School. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan University, and then transferred to American University where he received a B.A. in his double major of Liberal Studies and Education. He came back to Lab as an assistant teacher, after two years became a full staff member as a High School physical education instructor. He also serves as coach in both varsity soccer and basketball and implemented the first varsity tennis program at Lab. Jon is married with two children, Claire and Carley.

Jenny van Agtmael – 2006

Jenny came to the Lab School in 1990 and graduated in 1997. She went on to Lynn University and achieved a B.A. in 2001 in Human Services/Psychology. Four years later she earned her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Now she teaches pre-school at the Browne Academy in Alexandria, Virginia. Jenny is a member of the Lab School Alumni Association Steering Committee.

Harold Watson – 1998

Harold entered Lab in 1984 and graduated in 1991. He went on to Florida A and M University where he was a member of the student government, of the Washington Metropolitan Club and a resident advisor, counselor, chaperon and tutor for the academic support service, college outreach program, Upward Bound College of Education. He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He provided recreation services to inner city youth and worked as a special police officer at Catholic University while he prepared to go to graduate school.

Danny Wiley - 1994

Danny is an artist in New York City. He completed Cooper Union with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and won a place in the prestigious Independent Study program of the Whitney Museum. Danny taught at the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment where he developed and taught school programs designed to get public school kids throughout Brooklyn to investigate their surroundings. He organized shows including the lower Manhattan Sign Project, won the Sarah Cooper Hewitt Fund Prize, the Royal Society of Arts’ Silver medal and the Cooper Union Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Service to the School. In March 2008, Danny was in Berlin for the “NY-Berlin Dialogues.” He recently completed his masters program in geography.
