  • Assistance with deciding where to apply to college
  • Establishment of a timeline for applying to colleges
  • Discussion of special accommodations that might be needed
  • Guidance with completing the college application including the essay
  • Review of possible questions that might be asked on an interview
  • Positive ways to describe a learning disability and attention problem
  • Ways to explain poor grades on a transcript without being accusatory
  • Establish how to select a major
  • Instruction on how to self advocate

Options for what happens after high school can vary from attending a four year college or university, going to a junior college or community college, enrolling in a technical school or taking a full time or part time job. Knowing which selection to make can be confusing and frustrating. The Lab School College Counseling service will help each student select an option that is manageable and affordable.

Parents need help too:

The troublesome college selection process can be made even more difficult when working with a student with learning disabilities or attention problems. The College Counseling staff at The Lab School of Washington is available to help parents and their children understand what to look for and what questions to ask when looking at colleges and when talking to college admissions personnel. Factored into the process are the student's abilities and talents and special needs, and the size, location, and cost of the college.

Services include:

  • Review of student school records and psychoeducational evaluation prior to the scheduled meeting
  • Meeting with the student and in most cases, the parent or guardian
  • Guidance in selection of appropriate type of post high school option to choose
  • Discussion of type of accommodations to request from the school
  • Help in developing an advocacy strategy
