Lower School

The Lower School at Baltimore Lab is comprised of five multi-aged classrooms. Class sizes are under 12 students and are taught by a full-time teacher with the help of a full-time classroom assistant.

Each students' day is divided between academic subjects and the arts. The classroom curriculum focuses on the teaching of specific developmental skills within five core subjects: reading, language arts (which includes process writing, spelling and grammar), mathematics, science and social studies. Subjects are often taught in an integrated manner, for example, reading historical fiction that encompasses goals from both the reading and history curriculums.

The rest of the day is spent in classes such as art, drama, dance, PE, music, and club, all of which support and enhance academic learning as well.

Curriculum in all classes is highly individualized, according to each students' needs. Learning is further enhanced by many real-world applications and field trips relating directly to the curriculum and/or the social needs of our students.

While many students receive individual and small group instruction in speech/language, occupational therapy, and psychological services, all students benefit from the integrated services provided by these staff members within the classroom each week.
