July 1, 2009
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of Katherine Schantz, the new Head of The Lab Schools. She was chosen unanimously by our Board of Trustees last winter after a yearlong national search.Katherine’s career has been dedicated to teaching and administration in schools for students with learning disabilities. For the past eight years, she was the Head of the Delaware Valley Friends School (DVFS) in Paoli, Pennsylvania, a coeducational Quaker school that serves students with learning disabilities in grades seven through twelve. Prior to that she was Associate Head and Academic Dean, respectively, at the Kildonan School, a school that also serves students with learning disabilities in Amenia, New York. Katherine has a Master’s of Education in Counseling and Consulting Psychology from Harvard University and she completed her undergraduate studies in Economics at Kalamazoo College. She has also completed all of her course and field work (ABD) toward the completion of a Doctorate in Counseling and Consulting Psychology, also at Harvard University.
As Board Chair Robert Mathias said at the time of her selection. “The Board found Katherine to be thoughtful, insightful, inspiring and innovative. She also proved to be an extraordinary listener. We have no doubt that she is the right person at the right time to lead The Lab School of Washington and Baltimore Lab. Our standards were high: the challenge great. We were looking for a teacher, leader, mentor, innovator, fundraiser, strategic planner, truth-teller, businessperson, creative thinker, and, most importantly, a person who has a passion for our children. We have found a leader who will take us further than we ever imagined.”
