Tutoring
IThe Lab School's Tutoring Service provides diagnostic prescriptive tutoring individually tailored to meet each student's needs. Our clients include students in regular classrooms as well as students with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or ADHD/ADD/language problems, and range from kindergarteners to adults.
Students can receive remediation in all academic areas - such as reading, spelling, composition, math, geography, history, science, computer literacy - as well as assistance in learning study skills and modes of organization so that he or she can effectively complete academic work. Our tutors teach everything from reading readiness skills to SAT examination preparation.
Where and How Often?
Tutoring should occur at least two times per week, preferably three. Less than two sessions per week is often counter-productive, as it is extremely difficult to maintain an appropriate level of consistency with a single weekly meeting.
The times and places for tutoring sessions are mutually agreed upon by the tutor and client. For instance, tutoring sessions may take place:
- in the student's home
- at the student's school during a specified time period (with the school's permission) or after school hours
- at a public place, such as a public library
If the tutor travels, there is an extra charge for the time and transportation cost.
Our Tutors
Tutors are highly trained, carefully monitored and supervised by the Director of Tutoring. Regular monthly in-service workshops provide on-going training for Lab School tutors, and tutors are welcome at all teaching workshops run by The Lab School. All LSW tutors must earn a minimum of 5 CEUs each academic year to maintain status as a LSW tutor.
Tutors are primarily:
- Master teachers at The Lab School who have Master's Degrees in Special Education: Learning Disabilities
- Graduate students working toward their degree in Special Education: Learning Disabilities at American University
- Teachers who have been specially trained by participating in a ten-month course and practicum at The Lab School, receiving a certificate designating completion of the program with skills of excellence
- Specialists of content areas (calculus, geometry) who are matched with students requiring the particular expertise of these individuals
