Visual and Performing Arts
There are several goals in the performing arts department at the Baltimore Lab School. First, we want to teach the students the skills and techniques involved in Dance, Drama, and vocal and instrumental Music on the Lower School, Junior High and High School levels. Additionally, we use a multi-cultural approach in all arts areas, providing an inter-disciplinary cohesiveness that aids in the students' acquisition and retention of knowledge. There has been much research done in the use of the arts in assisting with academics and life-skills. This is particularly true with the population we serve: the objectives of focus, memory, and ensemble work are the underpinnings of the work we do in the studios on a daily basis.
Our performance calendar is rigorous. The lower school has a Fall production (for students only), a Holiday show (at Lovely Lane Church), participates in the African-American Heritage Celebration at Howard University, and performs in a play for parents in the Spring. The upper grades produce and screen films in the Acting for Film & TV class and the Advanced Acting Ensemble performs in a revue co-produced with the Lab School of Washington and in a Spring show.
At Baltimore Lab, the arts, both visual and performing, are integral to Sally Smith's vision and philosophy of capitalizing on our students' creative strengths. The arts faculty is first-rate and is committed to the ideal of allowing every student to shine.
