What Are Learning Disabilties?

A broad range of neurological problems cause learning disabilities.  They are quite distinct from retardation or emotional disturbances.  Adults with learning disabilities may have trouble knowing their left side from their right side or alphabetizing anything.  Reading, writing, spelling, and math are real stumbling blocks.  Harder to pinpoint are problems in paying attention, following directions, remembering information in the proper order, managing time, organizing themselves, or planning ahead.

Your emotional, social, and academic development is often adversely affected if these serious obstacles are not addressed. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

•    Do you avoid reading?
•    Does it take you hours to write a memo?
•    Do you telephone rather than write?
•    Do you panic if you have to fill out a form?
•    Is your spelling terrible?
•    Does your checkbook ever balance?
•    Can you make change quickly?
•    Do you have trouble organizing your belongings, your conversations, your work, your presentations or speeches?
•    Do you need help with your resume?
•    Can you write a business letter?
•    Are you anxious about using a computer?
