By High School, teens are ready to tackle the demands of college preparatory courses. While striving to give teens a typical high school experience, The Lab School remains true to our core philosophy throughout the older grades. Experiential, multi-sensory methods are used to reinforce the learning process so that students can master rigorous subject matter, including Latin, physics, chemistry, calculus, and rhetoric. Executive functions, such as time management, critical thinking, and analytic skills, are emphasized as students prepare for “life after Lab.”
The social world of High School students expands – there are approximately 140 students in grades 9-12. Individual classes, however, remain small, averaging 8 students or fewer. Independence is fostered. Older students assume more responsibility for their work, choose academic electives, and earn off-campus lunch privileges. The High School offers opportunities to study abroad and travel to places such as Costa Rica, the Amazon Rainforest in Peru, and China.
Athletics become increasingly important. Lab School boasts trophies from the Maryland Independent School Athletic League and the Independent School Athletic Conference. Students can choose to participate in soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, cheerleading, track and field, and swimming, and new in 2011-2012, Lacrosse. The widely respected theater program, award winning debate team, Student UN and a wide range of other extracurricular activities offer the chance to build upon an interest – or discover a new one. |
