Sharing one’s personal testimonies and experiences is a gift. That is just what several students who attended the National Association of Independent School’s Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) recently did in front of an audience of parents and staff at a Lab School Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Parent Group evening meeting.
In conjunction with the annual People of Color Conference — the flagship of NAIS’ commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development — SDLC focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community.
At the DEI Parent Group, students shared their thoughts on the most meaningful parts of the conference — for them as individuals — then facilitated activities in which they had participated at SDLC, highlighting the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone in order to have courageous conversations and to understand the perspectives of others. “It was an emotional experience to hear our students talk about race in a way that past generations could not,” remarked Head of School Katherine Schantz. “We can all grow from these types of conversations.”
