A ping-pong zip line. A balloon-powered car. A spaghetti tower, a water wheel, a hover craft. These were just some of the 12 building challenges that students in five Elementary homerooms have been working on in Science. Starting with a question and moving through the research phase, brainstorming a hypothesis, creating a prototype, testing the prototype then redesigning, finding problems and solutions, making observations, and drawing conclusions. This eight-week unit culminated in the Engineering Fair where students show their poster boards and describe their process to their peers, parents, and teachers. Their advice to future students? “It’s okay to get frustrated and make mistakes. That’s how we learn.” Watch out world!
