High School

At the most recent Junior Internship Luncheon, organized to celebrate all the juniors who participated in a year-long internship with various companies and organizations around the greater DC area, now retired Internship Coordinator Kathy Briançon said, “Lab School juniors learned this year that … the customer is always right … recording studios are cool, but the phone doesn’t answer itself … cats scratch … theater sets don’t come in a box … technology still needs human beings to work effectively … and library books don’t shelve themselves …”

Ask our graduates about their special Lab School memories. They’re bound to mention our Internship Program! Junior-year students are offered the opportunity to work outside the school at a pre-approved job for up to three hours a day, five days a week for the full academic year. It’s an illuminating glimpse at career possibilities and a priceless chance to hone important workplace skills.

“It’s always fun to discover what the juniors are interested in and find an internship for them that clicks,” she says. “The year-long internship is not only a way for our students to acquire skills they might not get in academic classes, but it’s also a formalized way to have a job, probably their first job, but with a lot of support from us and from their employer. And the amount of growth in these kids from September to May is incredible to see.”
