Who We Serve
Learn more about the students who thrive here at Lab.
At The Lab School, we serve bright students entering grades 1-12 who have language-based learning differences.
Lab carefully considers each candidate to determine if our specifically designed program can be one in which the student will thrive.
Lab Students Demonstrate:
- average to superior cognitive abilities, as measured by standardized cognitive testing,
- strong reasoning skills despite relative weaknesses in processing speed and/or working memory
- intellectual curiosity and emotional well-being
Will My Child Thrive in Lab’s Program?
Lab is tailored to meet the needs of students who have one or more of the following primary diagnoses:
- SLD (Specific Learning Disability or Specific Learning Disorder)
- With impairment in reading (dyslexia)
- With impairment in written expression (dysgraphia)
- May involve an impairment in mathematics (dyscalculia)
- Expressive/Receptive Language Disorder (typically for younger students)
Most of our students also benefit from our focused work on executive functioning skills. Some of our students also have a diagnosis of ADHD.
When Lab May Not Be Right For My Child:
Lab’s specific teaching model and the curriculum may not be suitable for all students who learn differently. Although each application is assessed individually to determine whether Lab can provide the student with an appropriate program, students whose primary barrier to learning involves one of the following profiles are typically better served by other schools or programs that have the expertise to meet their specific needs:
- Intellectual disabilities
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Nonverbal learning disabilities
- Emotional and/or behavioral disorders
- Complex communication disorders, including primary receptive and/or social/pragmatic language deficits
If you have questions about whether Lab can support your child’s learning profile, please contact the admissions office.
