Proudly Lab: Alumni Highlight Series - Julia Tuvin '09
From her transformative years as a Lab student to her impactful career as a pediatric nephrology social worker, Julia Tuvin attributes her lifelong passion for helping others to the foundational support and inspiration she received at Lab.
Julia Tuvin began her educational journey at Lab as an elementary student in 1999. Her first two years here were particularly transformative; in Allison Malamut’s classroom, she was finally being taught in a way that made sense and in a setting that valued creativity. And Julia readily identifies more than a dozen Lab educators who inspired her growth in the years leading up to, and even beyond, her graduation from Lab in 2009, including: former Music Teacher Susan Carter who encouraged Julia to participate in The Opera Camp for Kids and the Children’s Chorus of Washington; Speech Language Pathologist Rayna Dinsmore who worked with Julia throughout Upper School, helping her build strategies to support her learning; and former Head of Upper School Dick Meltzer who inspired her love of Hemingway. During her time on the Reservoir Campus, Julia was elected as a class representative on student government, earned membership in our International Thespian Society, edited our high school arts and literary magazine, and completed an internship as a Congressional Page in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Following graduation, Julia traveled to Israel as part of the Young Judea Year Course Program. Upon her return to the United States, Julia completed courses at Montgomery College before transitioning to the University of Maryland, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and government in 2014. In 2019, she earned her Master of Social Work from Catholic University. A clinically licensed social worker in DC and a Certified Clinical Transplant Social Worker, Julia is a Nephrology Social Worker at Children’s National Hospital. Her drive to enter the medical field comes, in part, from the passing of her mother in 2011 and reflects Julia’s empathic nature she has long been known for. Julia says, “I work in the medical field now to help families because I understand how hard it is to have a family member who is sick. I work in pediatrics because I hope that I can make a lasting impact in the same way that Lab did for me.” She dedicates herself to children who have general kidney issues, chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis, or are going through the transplant process. Much of her time is spent ensuring the parents have the support they need to take care of their medically complex children, referring them to resources and assessing the whole family system.
Over the years, Julia has remained connected to Lab, attending on-campus gatherings, keeping in touch with the educators who meant so much to her, and, in 2024, participating in our Upper School Career Day as a session speaker. When asked why she stays connected to Lab, Julia shared, “Lab gave me so much. I would not be the person I am today if I had not gone to Lab.”
